Suaimhneas, meaning Peace in the Irish language, draws its inspiration from Insula Art, a remarkable artistic movement that emerged during early Irish monasticism. The design reflects the swirling motifs and spiral forms typical of this period of creativity. Often referred to as the "age of saints and scholars", the era was considered a golden age for the arts in Ireland. Shown in 8' square version. Limited Edition of 15 Irish wool functional floor art or tapestry by Rhyme Studio. Made of traditionally spun pure Irish wool in rural Ireland and tufted by hand. In 2020 the market for Irish wool officially collapsed. Sheep farmers found themselves unable to sell freshly shorn fleeces and in some cases, forced to dump or burn wool. Rhyme Studio is on a mission to expose this environmental travesty and promote the importance of choosing natural and biodegradable wool in design manufacturing, one of the oldest, most enduring high performance materials that exist today. Meanwhile, in the USA alone, an estimated 2.5 million tons of mostly synthetic, chemically toxic carpet is sent to landfill each year, representing an unsustainable industry and a market out of balance. The Rhyme Studio ultimate goal is a model of circular design manufacturing and to put nothing out into the world that does not also give back in equal measure. Something of a miracle fiber, wool is highly durable with inherent flame resistance and natural water repellency - statistics literally no other fiber for carpet can match. With sustainable quality craftsmanship as a founding principle, the company seeks to help reverse the disturbing decline and waste associated with the wool market, and highlight the environmental crisis facing the industry, not least the difficulties that many sheep farmers now face. Natural wool fiber after all, not synthetic fiber, is Nature’s way. About Rhyme Studio & Claire McGovern Rhyme Studio is an interior design, art advisory and design manufacturer based in New York City with a production studio in rural Ireland. Irish designer and founder Claire McGovern is a veteran of the design and art worlds. Born and raised in Dublin, her entrepreneurial days began with an acclaimed art and design gallery evolving into the multi-disciplinary studio she operates today. With a background in fine art and design, McGovern’s expertise has ranged from that of a curator and interior designer to playing a pivotal role in the development of award winning luxury design manufacturers and artistic careers. In 2017 she embarked upon the project of realizing a sustainable and authentic design collection made entirely by hand in rural Ireland. Beginning with a series of Irish wool designs the collection will eventually grow into a multi-media array of furnishings dedicated only to the highest quality, responsible craftsmanship. Rhyme Studio also represents the works of Irish sculptor Helen O'Connell & Canadian storm chaser Ian Sheldon and the company is a proud member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council.

About the Maker

Rhyme Studio

Rhyme Studio is a Brooklyn based design manufacturer, interiors and art advisory. On a mission to breathe unique form, color and sustainable craftsmanship into the world of rug design, we source Irish wool for our rug collection from Galway sheep farms. It is processed at a historic 300 year old woolen mill, hand dyed using natural dyes by a 200 year old mill before tufted by hand into carpet at our rural Irish farmhouse studio. The OM Series derives from a 1600 year old alphabet called Ogham and features the rich deep naturally brown wool of the Irish Zwartbles sheep. Known for monumental inscriptions on standing stones, it is believed that Ogham or the "tree alphabet" was created by druids and scholars as a secret form of communication. Other collections include Limited Edition The Insula Series inspired by 7th Century Irish art and illuminated manuscripts which was considered a golden age for the arts in Ireland. "The Trinity Series" is a study of triangular forms and rich colours and a fourth design series entitled "Modernity" will debut in early 2021. Founder Claire McGovern has designed interiors, curated art and design installations and collaborated with many talented artists and designers. Her entrepreneurial days began with a critically acclaimed art and design gallery evolving into the interiors and design practice she operates from New York City today. Her office is proud to also represent the works of storm chaser Ian Sheldon and sculptor Helen O'Connell.
