About

Selected by New York Magazine’s Design Editor Wendy Goodman as one of the best of NY Design Week 2021, called “Multi–layered inspiration by The New York Times, featured in “Decades of Design” by Gray Magazine and “Rhyme Studio, Modernity Collection”, Cover Magazine. A percentage of all Rhyme Studio carpet sales is dedicated to the purchase of fleece from Irish sheep farmers and to the company’s ongoing mission to promote a return to the use of renewable and biodegradable wool fibers. Supreme: Inspired by the remarkable Supremus series created by celebrated painter Kasimir Malevich, Rhyme Studio’s rug or tapestry design Supreme is one of several designs from the Modernity Collection. Calling upon the inspiration of pure geometric and architectural lines, Modernity presents naturally dyed Irish wool rugs and tapestries in a series of sleek, minimal, design forms. Featured design works embrace the legacies of renowned Irish designer Eileen Gray and abstract painter Kasimir Malevich while continuing Rhyme Studio’s mission to highlight a critically urgent need to support the use of natural wool fibers in design manufacturing. Most agree that Modernist art began with the geometric abstraction of Kasimir Malevich. The design Supreme explores his idea of geometric and minimal form as divine and the artist’s desire to liberate the canvas from the representational world. Elevating the rectangle and clean line to a high art, form & colour for Malevich took precedence over other considerations and his arrangements of these elemental shapes had an influence that reverberated throughout the creative arts including upon the work of Irish designer Eileen Gray. The simplicity of form also lends itself perfectly to the company’s first hand tufted series to explore the nuances of texture, featuring surface sculpting, penciling and beveling techniques. The border of each shape is painstakingly beveled to add dimension and depth, with subtle geometric sculpted surfaces to be found embedded in the occasional circle, square or triangle. One of the most important eras in the history of design, architecture and art, Kasimir Malevich’s era of Modernism represented pivotal change - not unlike recent times. The built environment that we inhabit today is largely shaped by the Modernist movement, the buildings we live in, the chairs we sit upon and the graphic design that surrounds us have all been influenced by the aesthetics and ideology of Modernist design. Pricing and size reflected is for a 6' x 9' rug or tapestry. Offered in standard sizes of 6' x 9', 9' x 12', 12' x 15' with custom sizes and colors available upon request. “In 2017 we produced our first hand tufted Irish wool rug prototype in Ireland only to discover that all local rug makers use only non native wools and fibers” says designer Claire McGovern. “Delving further, we found that the market for Irish wool and indeed wool internationally, has declined significantly over the last half century, not only due to mass production of cheap petrochemical based synthetic and non recyclable fibers but a failure to recognize the vital renewable and biodegradable qualities of this age old, natural material. Wool as a fiber has been in many respects forsaken and we intend to change that” In 2020 the market for Irish wool officially collapsed. Sheep farmers found themselves unable to sell freshly shorn fleeces and in some cases, forced to dump or burn wool. Rhyme Studio is on a mission to expose this environmental travesty and promote the importance of choosing natural and biodegradable wool in design manufacturing, one of the oldest, most enduring high performance materials that exist today. Meanwhile, in the USA alone, an estimated 2.5 million tons of mostly synthetic, chemically toxic carpet is sent to landfill each year, representing an unsustainable industry and a market out of balance. The Rhyme Studio ultimate goal is a model of circular design manufacturing and to put nothing out into the world that does not also give back in equal measure. Something of a miracle fiber, wool is highly durable with inherent flame resistance and natural water repellency - statistics literally no other fiber for carpet can match. With sustainable quality craftsmanship as a founding principle, the company seeks to help reverse the disturbing decline and waste associated with the wool market, and highlight the environmental crisis facing the industry, not least the difficulties that many sheep farmers now face. Natural wool fiber after all, not synthetic fiber, is Nature’s way. About the Maker

Rhyme Studio

Rhyme Studio is a Brooklyn based design manufacturer, interiors and art advisory. On a mission to breathe unique form, color and sustainable craftsmanship into the world of rug design, we source Irish wool for our rug collection from Galway sheep farms. It is processed at a historic 300 year old woolen mill, hand dyed using natural dyes by a 200 year old mill before tufted by hand into carpet at our rural Irish farmhouse studio. The OM Series derives from a 1600 year old alphabet called Ogham and features the rich deep naturally brown wool of the Irish Zwartbles sheep. Known for monumental inscriptions on standing stones, it is believed that Ogham or the "tree alphabet" was created by druids and scholars as a secret form of communication. Other collections include Limited Edition The Insula Series inspired by 7th Century Irish art and illuminated manuscripts which was considered a golden age for the arts in Ireland. "The Trinity Series" is a study of triangular forms and rich colours and a fourth design series entitled "Modernity" will debut in early 2021. Founder Claire McGovern has designed interiors, curated art and design installations and collaborated with many talented artists and designers. Her entrepreneurial days began with a critically acclaimed art and design gallery evolving into the interiors and design practice she operates from New York City today. Her office is proud to also represent the works of storm chaser Ian Sheldon and sculptor Helen O'Connell.
