19th Century 'Riband Back' Chippendale Mahogany Armchair in Mohair Velvet

$6,800Asking Price

About

An exquisite mid-19th century mahogany carver signed by Wright & Mansfield after designs by Thomas Chippendale. The pierced carved splats exhibit ribbons and acanthus and C scrolls while the sinuous arms extend forward terminating in finely scrolled ends. The chair sits on robust cabriole legs with knee and bracket carving ending in full, deeply carved French scroll feet. The seat is covered in a lustrous golden olive mohair velvet. Executed after plates for "riband back" chairs in Chippendale's "The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director" from 1754, these delicate designs proved to difficult for most 18th century carpenters. These designs experienced a revival after 1860. This Fine example comes from one of the finest furniture makers of 19th century Britain, having received the gold medal from Napoleon III at the 1867 Paris Universelle Exposition. Wright & Mansfield's authenticity extended beyond design and reproduced 18th century construction methods. This chair is a remarkable example of the firm's observation of 18th century form and sensibility. The carving of the splat and knees are first rate, and the its composition as an armchair makes the piece highly desirable.
