2 Antique Japanese Imperial Meiji Elm High Relief Carved Dragon Throne Armchair

About the Item

A breathtaking pair of 19th century imperial meiji throne chairs. Made from Elm with an elaborate and meticulous carved dragon motif. At the center are a pair of orchids flanked by sprawling dragons which can be seen sharing a ball or pearl along the crown. The pearl represents the beginning of life and are associated with spiritual energy, wisdom, prosperity, power and immortality. The dragons extend from the crown towards the shoe of the back where their tails cross amidst a field of clouds and pierced lower backing. This motif is mirrored into the arms with thick scales and gnarling mouths. This serpent design continues into the seat rest with a serpentine front featuring a Greek key carved edge. Each chair is supported by 4 legs and includes a pierced apron of winged dragons within a field of clouds. The front legs smoothly taper into a scrolled foot. An impressive yet elegant pair for any setting.
