20th Century French Pair of Beech Armchairs by Etienne-Henri Martin & Steiner

About the Item

A vintage French Art Deco pair of armchairs, fauteuils made of hand crafted polished Beechwood, detailed in a high gloss finish, designed by the Etienne-Henri Martin and produced by Steiner in good condition. The Parisian cocktail, club chairs have a slightly inclined backrest, particularized by sculptural arched armrests, composed with a loose cushion which is consisting its original spring. Model SK40. Manufacturer label at the bottom of the frame. Newly upholstered in a white Velvet. Wear consistent with age and use. Circa 1930 - 1940, Paris, France. Seat: 17" H x 21.5" W x 21" D Etienne-Henri Martin was born in 1913 Paris, France and passed away in 1997 France. He was a French designer and decorator. Martin studied at the Ecole Boulle university in Paris, where he specialized in metal. Martin led the design workshops of major department stores in France and Belgium. Steiner is a French furniture and design company founded in 1926 in the Parisian suburb of Faubourg St. Antoine, France by Charles Steiner. Well-known artists have worked and designed for Steiner, such as the French designer Etienne-Henri Martin and Pierre Guariche, etc. To this day, Steiner is an internationally recognized furniture manufacturer. Charles Steiner was born in 1894 in Bucharest, Romania and passed away in 1946 in Paris, France. At early age, Steiner moved to Paris, where he got involved in the principles of functionalism and the Bauhaus movement. In 1926, he founded his furniture company Steiner. His personal life and professional training remain lost in history.

    Etienne-Henri Martin’s design work combined elements of classic and avant-garde French design. The French designer and decorator designed his most famous seating models in the early 1950s, symbolizing French modernism of the 20th century. Luxurious detailing and a bold graphic form define this so-called gondola chair. Gondola chairs are low chairs, often used at a writing desk with a curved back that forms the arms of the chair as well. The Gondola chair is named after the 18th-century Venetian gondola row boats which have a similar curvilinear shape. A generous base of sculpted wood lifts the structure that consists of a fully upholstered seat and the defining curve of the arms and back. The seat and back of significant proportions is visually formed of a single piece, sectioned on the back and perfectly fitted to the curves of the design. The thick seat cushion not only provides great comfort, but also serves as a visually appealing element. Martin's work had elements of traditional decorative art and elements of avant-garde that are apparent in this armchair, especially in the curved arms and in the tapered, triangle-shaped legs.
