About

This is a found armchair which has been carefully stripped and recycled by Ryan. The steam bent beech frame of this design is the Ercol Evergreen easy chair, designed in the 1950s by Lucian R Ercolani, and has been in production ever since.

Ryan scavenges around Portsmouth, England to find the raw material for her furniture which she reinvents through color and juxtapositions to create something new and bold.

It is important to Ryan that her pieces can be utilized for what they are, whilst she introduces an aesthetic that makes the observer ponder a more profound and ironic message.

From Karen Ryan:
‘I cannot help myself I just wanted to make another chair. A chair that was beautifully handcrafted and designed entirely by me.

A chair that showcased my love of structures made out of raw wood. But my conscience won over me as I stared at a further three discarded chairs that were now stacked in my studio.

At that moment my brief to myself was set, I would make my chair but it would be supported by the cultural histories of other chairs, transparent of its found state and bearing clear testament to its new construction.’
