Carl Malmsten, Lata Greven Klismos Style Armchairs, Pair

About

Carl Malmsten (1888 Sweden 1972), "Lata Greven", pair Brand marked "CM" under seat rail Beech legs, reupholstered in Rogers & Goffigon Linen Sateen Fabric Carl Malmsten, designer, architect and teacher continually contributed to the revival of Swedish craftsmanship. His creations were rooted in nature and Swedish culture, he liked wood, particularly light wood, and reinterpreted classic shapes with bold ideas. This pair of armchairs is wonderful example of his reinterpretation of the Sulla / klismos style chair which was very popular in Sweden in the 18th century. He is one of Sweden's most renowned and leading quality furniture designers of the mid-20th century. Malmsten studied furniture at the Nordic Museum and Skansen and in 1916 he won both first and second prize in a competition for interiors for Stockholm City Hall. Throughout his career, Malmsten collaborated with many architects and designers such as Ragnar Östberg, Ivar Tengbom and Ferdinand Boberg; all of whom designed for the Concert Hall and Ulriksdal Castle. In 1917, Malmsten a participated in i den idag klassiska hemutställningen (todays classic home) at Liljevalchs where the concept of "Beautiful Everyday Goods" was coined; Carl Larsson had a great influence on his work also subscribing to this same concept.
