Chinese 19th Century Dengguayi Scholar's Lamp-Hanger Armchair with Sinuous Splat

About the Item

A Chinese antique Qing dynasty scholar's lamp-hanger armchair from the late 19th century, with sinuous pierced splat, dark patina, curving arms and side stretchers. Born in China in the later years of the 19th century, this scholar's lamp-hanger chair called dengguayi features an elegant tall back, topped with a curving rail. The central section presents a sinuous splat, pierced in its lower section with a delicate motif. Two serpentine open arms with out-scrolling extremities are sitting on the rectangular wooden seat, while the armchair is raised on four straight, slightly splaying legs, connected to one another through plain side stretchers and a curving apron. The perfect contrast of shapes of the upper section, opposing the concave Silhouette of the splat and the convex lines of the lateral supports, combined with a subtle decor, will make this 1880s Chinese scholar's lamp-hanger armchair with dark patina a perfect decorative accent for any home, perhaps placed in an office, bedroom or living room.
