With its extravagant appearance, the DS-163 round armchair proves itself an extremely salon ready item of furniture – be it for cocktails in an elegant hotel bar or reading in the comfortable surroundings of home. The conical base carries a soft seat shell while the supple design of the armchair exudes infinite comfort. The use of neck leather up to 5-mm-thick underscores the warmth and the comfort that are destined to surround the person.
Virginia Harper, who works for Guerlain, Victoria Beckham or Estée Lauder, developing design concepts in Milan and now in New York, came up with the design of DS-163 while nursing her second baby. She was delighted with chairs that let the seated person slide in, embracing him or her the way a mother would her child while at the same time calmly swiveling. Although the young designer had drafted the round armchair in a comprehensive, feminine esthetics based on this very inspiration, she also wanted to make the chair sustainably functional – and in the process discovered the great neck leather that offers added support for the warmth and coziness of the form. So lean back and relax in DS-163, the round armchair: the conical base carries a soft seat shell that opens in vitingly upward like a flowering bud. The supple design of the armchair exudes infinite comfort, not just in incomparable neck leather – but in tactile fabrics as well.

Characteristics: The fabric is produced by embedding an additional thread into a knitted fabric, with the thread forming tiny loops on the surface. These loops are cut open in a further workstep to create the velvety finish. The fine base product gives the fabric a light fall. Velour convinces with a soft feel and a noble appearance: for an individual, exclusive look in your rooms.

A de Sede piece lends a strong personality to the room it occupies. One of the world’s most respected furniture design houses, de Sede’s quality Swiss craftsmanship has its foundation in a long history of making expertly designed saddles. Founded in 1965 to build on a successful family-run saddler’s workshop in Klingnau, Switzerland, de Sede now is a leading manufacturer of leather goods and furniture, including sofas, chairs and beds.
At the core of de Sede’s philosophy is a reverence for the complexity and beauty of handcrafted furniture in an age when mass-produced objects are the norm. Over the years, the atelier has built a name for itself in its modular furniture pieces, which are made using the highest quality leather upholstery. The sleek, elegant pieces incorporate functionality with beauty. Amongst their best-selling designs is the DS-600 introduced in 1972. Also known as the Non Stop sofa, it is a sensually curved, snaking modular sofa whose individual pieces can be zipped together to create multiple variations and arcs.
De Sede has collaborated with some of the world's finest design minds, enhancing the prestige and individuality of their products. Designers like Santiago Calatrava, Antonella Scarpitta, Stephan Hürlemann, Gordon Guillaumier and Philippe Malouin have all created pieces with the atelier. Ubald Klug’s 1974 DS-1025, also known as the Terrazza sofa, is an enduring favorite with its cascading levels of leather. In 2017, de Sede expanded its product line to include high-quality leather handbags, which are as thoughtfully designed and beautifully crafted as its furniture. De Sede AG is now part of the Volare Group AG and continues to handcraft its fine furniture and other goods from its factory in Klingnau.
