English Carved Walnut Armchair in the George II Style

About

An armchair in the style of the George II for Charles Tozer of Brook Street London Constructed in walnut; rising from ball and claw footed cabriole legs, with carved scrolling at the shoulders, issuing ‘shepherd's crook’ arms, with dished armrests, the interlaced back adorned with carved rope tassels, with carved rosettes atop; the seat having needlepoint tapestry, and bearing the label of ‘Charles Tozer of 25 Brook Street London’ to the underframe, circa 1920 A very similar armchair, albeit in mahogany, is shown in Percy McQuoid’s ‘A History of English Furniture’ originally published 1904-8, revised by Bracken Books in 1998, on page 250 attributing the design to an early work of Thomas Chippendale. Charles Tozer & Co were leading interior decorators and designers in the first quarter of the 20th century, occupying 25 Brook Street, originally the home of George Frideric Handel for 36 years, and later, Jimmy Hendrix.
