English Early 19th Century Matched Pair of Spindleback Armchairs in Elm

About the Item

English early 19th century matched pair of spindleback armchairs in elm with rush seats. These hand turned armchairs are from the Lancashire or Cheshire districts of England. Most often these are used as armchairs for a set of dining chairs, but they can just as easily be used as a pair of comfortable chairs with a small table between them in another room in the home. English chairs with rush seats were made to have a loose cushion added to the seat, generally an inch to an inch and a half in depth and often tied to the back uprights. This not only makes for more comfort, but also prolongs the life of the rush greatly. Circa 1800-40.

A collection of 8 country spindleback chairs, with nice color and patina. They are very much handmade and are possibly a marriage of two different sets from the same maker. The back heights, seat heights, widths and depths are similar but not identical, as shown in several of the images. However, when put together as a set, the overall look is charming and elegant. The turnings are slightly lighter from use, as is appropriate. Nicely articulated and varied ball feet. Rush seats are in good condition. The measurements below are average for the collection.
