French 16th Century early Baroque Oak Barrel-Back Seat

About the Item

Tall, unusual and conceptual chair of half-round paneled form, The seat can be lifted on hinges forming a misericord supported by a fluted console. A a rare and form of free-standing choir stall, made of oak and having a beautiful unstained light color, with nice patina. Pegged construction, some shrinkage and minor age splits, consistent with age and use. Ex George Grey Barnard Collection (a large part of his collection was acquired b the Metropolitan Museum of Art and still remains at the Cloisters in New York City)
