French Louis XVI Fauteuil by Martin Jullien, Mid-18th Century

About

A Louis XVI fauteuil-style armchair in beech and linen by notable French master furniture maker Martin Jullien, circa 1760s. Balloon back rises above shaped seat flanked by cabriolet scroll arms. Stands on fluted and turned legs, the back pair having a subtly splayed stance. Evidence of the skilled craftsman’s hand on display throughout this uncommon and engaging early example. Very handsome additional character provided by refreshingly authentic patina and wear to the original finish. Tastefully reupholstered in understated windowpane stitch natural linen with complementary piping over new padding and webbing. Visually crisp backside with charmingly idiosyncratic crosspiece invites placement where it can be appreciated, such as at a desk, dressing table, or vanity. Stamped signature of “M. JULLIEN” on underside of front apron. Martin Jullien received his master designation on July 23, 1777, and his sought after yet seldom offered work has a history of garnering impressive results at auction.
