About the Item
This imaginative, over-sized arm chair is a delightfully comical example of the post-modern furniture design movement known as Memphis Style. Memphis Style is a reiteration of the Pop Art movement's attitudes and sensibilities; it is a colorful and playful critique of modern commercialism and traditional design. According to its founder Sottsas:
This chair is based on a traditional arm chair form; however, the skewed and exaggerated proportions reveal a Mannerist approach to furniture design. The chair stands five feet tall and four feet wide. This exaggerated scale transforms this chair into a throne while at the same time minimizing the size of the sitter. It is upholstered in center-cut cow hide with caramel colored spots on white. Arms and seat cushion upholstered in putty colored Ultrasuede with hunter green contrast welt. Memphis Style has been called the "ultimate fruit salad" of style, this chair lives up to this title.
