Mid-Century Modern Pair of 2-2 Armchair by Zanine Caldas, 1960s
About the Item
Produced by Zanine Caldas in Brazil during the 1960s, this pair of armchairs is constructed from plywood with a warm medium-toned finish. Each chair features a cantilevered flat-panel armrest supported by an angular side frame, with angled splayed legs characteristic of the period's structural vocabulary. The seat and backrest are upholstered in a handwoven grey textile by Bossa Fabrics, applied during restoration. Original hardware has been retained throughout, preserving the integrity of the joinery. The frames show visible bolt fixings at the lateral frame junctions, consistent with the original assembly method.
José Zanine Caldas (1919–2001) was a self-taught designer and architect born in Bahia, Brazil. In 1948, he co-founded Móveis Artisticos Z in Rio de Janeiro, producing plywood furniture at accessible price points for a nascent collector market. Following his departure from the company in the early 1950s, Zanine shifted toward large-scale sculptural work using solid timber, drawing on the traditions of local craftsmen in Bahia who carved from felled trees.
