Model Experiment armchair, designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro, manufactured by Avarte, 1980s. Black painted wood and chromed metal frame, leather upholstery. Good vintage condition, minor patina consistent with age and use. Born in 1933 in Vyborg, Finland, Yrjö Kukkapuro is one of the most internationally successful Finnish designers. He graduated as an interior architect from the University of Art and Design (Taideteollinen Korkeakoulu) in 1958 and founded his own design studio, Studio Kukkapuro, in 1959. In addition to his renowned and award-winning design work, Kukkapuro was a teacher, professor and rector from 1960 to 1990. Kukkapuro's most famous object is the Carousel Chair, voted the world's most comfortable chair by The New York Times in 1974. His work is in the permanent collections of many museums, including the MoMA in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Stockholm Museum of Modern Art. They have also been shown in dozens of solo and group exhibitions around the world.
