About the Item

A wonderful pair of japanned and gilt chinoiserie bergere armchairs. Retailer's label: F. Restall Ltd, Birmingham. English. Circa 1920. *Free delivery for all areas in mainland England & Wales only. Delivery to room of choice by a two person team. Items are left packed. Please contact me if you require more delivery information. Return delivery costs are met by the customer. The armchairs are ornately embellished with gilt chinoiserie scenes incorporating figures, landscape, trees, birds and trellis decoration. The chairs retain the wonderful original velvet upholstery. I felt it important to keep this original fabric, as it shows nice wear for its age. There however had been a tear to the fabric on one vertical side. This has been re-covered and tacked to the underside of the frame. Although not a perfect match, it closely resembles the original colour. Please refer to photographs number 9 and 10. The braiding has also been replaced, but is vintage. The gilt is worn to the front of the arms with use, there are light knocks and a few marks around the chairs with age. The back splats are a nice, wide example, making them more comfortable than most. The chairs are very sturdy with no loose joints. There is a very small amount of cane damage to one side of one chair, please refer to photograph number 11. There are a couple of holes to the hessian seat undersides. The sprung seating is all intact and the seating is still very useable, showing some use as expected with age. Additional dimensions information: The inside seat width is 59cm to 56cm to the back. The seat height is 37cm. The arm height is 61cm.
