Pair of Oak and Woven Rush Chairs in the Manner of Charles Dudouyt, France 1940s

About the Item

Charles Dudouyt's work was characterised by its simplicity and use of natural materials, such as oak, beech, and walnut. He favoured simple, geometric forms and often incorporated decorative elements, such as inlaid marquetry or carved details. This pair of chairs bear a striking resemblance to the works of Dudouyt, beautifully crafted from exquisite oak and woven rush. Unlike designs from outside the continent, European furniture pieces weren’t flashy but instead focused on being well-made and fitting for a warm, comfortable and inviting home. As this pair exemplifies, blending functionality, good quality natural materials and organic colours with excellent craftsmanship is the key to the success of the mid 20th century design period. The wooden structure is carefully carved, featuring a corkscrew pattern on the front legs, stretcher, and armrest supports. While mid-century design is generally restrained, woodworking often showed off the skills of the craftsman. The seats and back panels are made of durable woven rush, with a light colour. The partnership of the two natural materials, combined with the beautiful decorative carvings, are all features that make this pair visually arresting. Handmade mid-century furniture expressed ideals of usefulness and minimalism in the sculptural lines of shaped wood. The carefully carved shape and natural beauty of the oak - with its imperfections - make this pair ideal accent chairs. Although the designs of the mid-century era were wide-ranging in style, they often shared characteristics such as clean lines, organic materials, and a focus on functionality. These armchairs are on the more ornamented end of the design style, yet, they still appear modern, and would make a lovely addition to any interior in need of a natural touch. Charles Dudouyt easy chairs, straw and wood, France, 1940s, set of two. Recalling the turned chair model, Charles Dudouyt created these carved chairs as 'fireside' chairs, hence the low seats. Using playful geometries and construction, he crafted the wooden structure in Art Deco forms. The seats' original straw is preserved and creates a charming contrast with the dark wooden structure. The legs are joined by crosspieces, enhancing the squared shape of the design. Dudouyt enriched the typical French straw chair...
