About

Poul Hundevad, 'Egyptian' chairs, cognac leather, beech and birch, Denmark, 1950s.

This side chair is part of the midcentury design collection. This folding chair has X- shaped legs that are inspired on ancient Egyptian thrones and chairs. The frame is from solid beech. The seating and back are made of bended birch plywood covered with cognac leather that has patinated wonderfully over time. The arm rests are executed as leather straps as armrest, which is another reference to ancient furniture.

Poul Hundevad (1917-2011) was trained as a carpenter and for a short while owned his own cabinet making company. Hundavad is known for designing furniture with historica references. One of his most famous designs is a folding chair that is based on a folding chair found in a burial mound in Vamdrup which dates as far back as c. 1000-600 BC.

Please note that this chair can be used as a side chair but as it is a chair from the 1950s, everyday heavy use might proof too much for the construction of this delicate chair.
