'Sancarlo' Leather Lounge Armchair by Achille Castiglioni for Driade, circa 1982

About the Item

This unique Post-Modern 'Sancarlo' armchair, with an emphasis on ergonomics, function and geometry, was designed by Achille Castiglioni for Driade in 1982. Modeled from the Sanluca chair, designed a few decades earlier with his brother Pier Giacomo, the Sancarlo lounge chair features tubular metal bent and curved around throughout the entirety of the chair including the legs, arms, and frame which holds the four leather cushions, each cushion intentionally positioned in a manner to increase comfort and ergonomics. seat into a series of cushions which curve to each part of the body they have to support. This design was ground breaking when it was first presented and is now a sought-after design for Post-Modern art and design collectors. This San Carlo arm chair by Achile Castigioni for Driade would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as a side chair, dining, cafe or breakfast table chair, bedside chair, fireside chair, dressing or changing room chair, hallway chair, entryway or mudroom chair, nursing or reading chair, conference room chair, office or desk chair, guest chair, lobby chair, lounge chair or occasional chair ideal in virtually any setting. • Clara Porset Patinated Leather and Cypress 'Butaque' Armchair, Mexico, c. 1947
    By Clara Porset
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
An incredible 'Butaque' armchair attributed to Clara Porset in gorgeous patinated leather and cypress wood, designed in 1947 Mexico. *Note, the 2 additional chairs in the last few images have sold and are no longer available. In the mid-1930s after moving to Mexico, Cuban born designer Clara Porset began researching the furniture of the region and the 'Butaque' chair captured her interest. A Colonial-era hybrid of Spanish X-frame chairs and pre-Columbian ritual duhos, the Butaque chair appeared in late 16th century Venezuela and proliferated across trade routes from New Orleans to Havana. Once the Butaque chair made its way to the U.S., where it was called the Campeche (or Campeachy) chair, Thomas Jefferson acquired one in 1819 and had it copied and adapted. Mexico’s Butaque chair was right up Clara Porset’s alley. She wrote that she was attracted to furniture that exhibited an “acute sensitivity to a region’s climate, natural materials, level of technical development, and evolution in terms of its social structure, aesthetics, and customs.” The designer tapped artisans to create versions in local materials such as oak, mahogany, wicker, and leather. Archivist Jorge Vadillo López explains “Her ergonomic adaptation in structure makes it modern,”. Architect Luis Barragán commissioned some of Porset’s Butaques...

  • Sergio Rodrigues 'Tonico' Jacaranda, Leather and Alpaca Armchairs, 1960s Brazil
    By Oca, Sergio Rodrigues
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
If you are looking for the most unique and coveted rare pair of armchairs for you or your client, look no further, this pair of Sergio Rodrigues 'Tonico' lounge chairs are the best examples you can find, and we will explain why below. First, this pair was produced under supervision by Sergio in his own factory in Brazil - but - exclusively for the US market, distributed for a very short time by Brazilian Interiors in the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the gallery of this listing is a photo of the Brazilian Interiors catalogue that displays this model and confirms production was supervised by Sergio in his own factory in Brazil. The unique attribute on this pair of 'Tonico' lounge chairs is the addition of paddle arms whereas normal production of the Tonico design was without armrests. This addition adds greater comfort to these already incredibly comfortable chairs. Secondly, 'Tonico' lounge chairs, loveseats and sofas are already incredibly rare - this pair with paddle arms are even more exceptionally rare and special. Of Sergio's designs, the 'Tonico' line is the most sought after by collectors and art collectors - this pair possesses greater rarity and also have the additional value of provenance which makes them much more valuable and desirable for collectors over the typical Tonico chairs...
