Bench, Walnut, Iron, 17th Century
Bench with backrest made of carved walnut wood. The legs have a "chambrana" in its lower part that joins them in pairs and is decorated in its low profile with a series of curves, detail that relates the piece with the Baroque. Also in this style belong the iron fasteners, curved and decorated with discs and a curved top that resembles a simplified volute. A series of rivets are placed on the seat and backrest; in the vertical zone appear, in golden metal, three equal heraldic shields: royal crown open as bell, barracks in cross with castle in first and fourth barracks, and lion rampant in second and third barracks; This shield of "Castilla y León" is presented surrounded by the necklace of the "Orden del Toisón de Oro". Regarding the shield, it is possible to find several similar works: compare for example with the Royal Standard made for the proclamation of Charles II in the Workshops of Medina del Campo (Museo de las Ferias) with shields of the late 15th century, with a different crown; or the Community of Villa and Tierra de Sepúlveda Community Banner of the second half of the 18th century (Museo de los Fueros), with differences in the Golden Fleece Necklace. The absence of Lis flowers links the coat of arms with the House of Austria. It is possible, therefore, that the piece was linked to an official body such as a Council. The bank belongs to a typology sometimes known as "banco de zaguán", very common in 17th century Spain and with a simple form and with examples preserved in institutions such as the Museo del Greco (Toledo) or the National Museum of Decorative Arts from Madrid.
