French Late 18th Century Louis XVI Period Painted and Parcel-Gilt Canapé Settee

About the Item

A French Louis XVI period painted and parcel-gilt canapé settee from the late 18th century, with rectangular back, out-scrolled arms, fluted legs and deep cantaloupe colored upholstery. This French settee features an exquisite structure, typical of the neoclassical taste that raptured Europe, starting with the rediscovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The curvy silhouettes of the Louis XV period are now replaced by a calm regularity, accented with delicate carved motifs. Our canapé was born in the later years of the Age of Enlightenment, under the short reign of King Louis XVI. The entire structure, painted and parcel-gilt, is highlighted by delicate rais-de-coeurs and beaded motifs. The rectangular back is flanked with two lovely fluted, column out-scrolled arms, adorned with guilloche motifs and carved rosettes. The settee is raised on elegant fluted tapering legs. The ensemble is covered with a deep cantaloupe upholstery with multicolored serpentine cording. The warm color of this upholstery contrasts beautifully with the painted and parcel-gilt structure. With its calm neoclassical elegance and stunning colors, this French Louis XVI canapé from the late 18th century will bring a graceful presence to any living room or bedroom.
