Superb 19th Century French Painted Louis XVI Style Canape

About the Item

Hand-carved in the style of Louis XVI, this French canape features painted wood and a heather purple velvet upholstery with a gimp border. The highly detailed wood has been patinated in an antique white color with gold and silver rechampi subtly applied. Rechampi is the French technique of applying added color to carvings to make them stand out. Floral margent carvings adorn the top of the gently sloping back, extending the profile at the highest points. In between the flowers is a row of beading with a repeating geometric shaped border beneath. Near the thickest part of the carved margent is a floral volute adorned with additional beading and geometric shapes. Deeply curved arms emanate from the volutes, terminating with another set of floral volutes at the hand rest. The arm stumps are comprised of detached columns, which are embellished with chandelle fluting between two distinct leaf cups. Four square blocks with recessed moldings form the joinery between the frame and the tapering chandelle legs. The facade of the two front joints have been embellished with single florets. Each leg terminates in an onion foot, which is a more bulbous version of a bun foot. “This form of this canapé, in particular the distinctive baluster armrest supports terminating in outward scrolls, is very similar to one now in the Louvre, which has traditionally been described as à la turque, inspired by the numerous boudoirs turcs that were created in the 1780s in response to the famous cabinet turc of the king’s brother the Comte d’Artois in his Palais du Temple in the late 1770s, furnished by the leading Louis XVI menuisier Georges Jacob (1739-1814) (ill. in B. Pallot, Furniture Collections in the Louvre, Vol.II Dijon 1993, n.51 p.149). A similar form also appears on a canapé supplied by Jacob after designs by the neoclassical architect and draughtsman Jean-Démosthène Dugourc for the Pavillon de Monsieur, Comte de Provence at Versailles in 1785, then being furnished for his mistress the Comtesse de Balbi (now in the Petit Trianon; ill. in P. Arrizoli-Clementel, Versailles, Furniture of the Royal Palace, Dijon 2002, no.93 p.260). Jacob would provide a similar canapé two years later as part of a suite for the Salon des Jeux of Louis XVI at the Château de Saint-Cloud, now at Versailles (ill. P.
