"Chinese Chair" by Hans Wegner

About

The elemental and elegant "Chinese Chair" of 1943 was the first great work by the legendary Danish furniture designer, Hans Wegner. Of all of Wegner's Ming-inspired chairs, this early design was the most faithful to its classical model. Handmade of cherry wood, these famous chairs are actually very practical, and in use, extremely comfortable. The "Chinese Chair" should not be confused with other, more commonly seen Wegner designs in the Chinese style. The "Chinese Chair" has always been very costly (about five times the price of the somewhat similar "Wishbone Chair", designed by Wegner in 1949 with an eye towards mass production). The high price of the "Chinese Chair" was a consequence of the amount of exacting craftsmanship which is required to hand carve and join the cherry wood (in particular, the arms of the chair); and the precision called for in building a chair whose legs do not require stretchers for structural integrity. This last detail ensures that the chair's lines are uncluttered, giving a light and airy appearance. There was also a later design, sometimes called the "Chinese Chair", which one encounters on occasion, but this "updated" version was also designed with economy in mind, with stretchers connecting the legs, and rather less delicate and graceful arms. The single chair offered here is the original, classic "Chinese Chair" designed in 1943 and made by Fritz Hansen -- the original manufacturer -- in Lynge, Denmark from the 1940s through the 1990s. This example was made in 1972. Literature: Noritsugu Oda, "Hans J. Wegner's 100 Chairs", pp. 22-23.
