Four Mid-Century Modern Hans Wegner PP 203 Oak and Wenge Chairs
About the Item
A rare and stunning set of PP 203 chairs designed by Hans Wegner in 1969 and produced in that very begin period. The set is in great condition and over the past 40 years the oakwood has been treated with oil. A set like this from the late 1960s-early 1970s is almost impossible to come by.
The pp201/pp203 combines the aesthetics of the pp701 Minimal chair with the construction of the pp66 Chinese chair thus creating a new expression, where the strict geometrically defined frame construction supports only the most prudent use of those organic shapes so characteristic of Wegner's work through the 1950s.
The pp201/pp203 also marks one of the most important milestones in the lifelong close partnership between Hans J. Wegner and PP Møbler. Until 1969, PP Møbler had been more of a free space for Wegner rather than a business partner. Although PP Møbler had produced thousands of frames for the pp19 teddy bear chair, Wegner's relation to PP Møbler was primarily based on his friendship with the PP family and the craftsmen, and indeed the PP workshop provided the surroundings where he conceived the ideas for many of his prototypes and experiments through the 1960s and to the end of his career.
In 1969, in addition to designing the pp201/pp203, Wegner also designed the PP logo and encouraged PP Møbler to initiate their own line of products as well as their own sales department. During the next 25 years, Wegner designed all PP Møblerâ's sales and marketing material and he placed his best and most cherished new and previous designs at PP Møbler.
PP 203's combined arm, and backrest is made of one piece of solid steam bended wood and one piece of carved solid wood with joint details of wenge.

Hans J. Wegner
Best known for his chairs and seating pieces — though a master of many furniture types like sofas and tables — Hans Wegner was a prolific designer whose elegant, often ebullient, forms and devotion to the finest methods in joinery made "Danish Modern" a popular byword for stylish, well-made furniture in the mid-20th century.
Wegner considered himself a carpenter first and a furniture designer second. Like his peers Arne Jacobsen and Finn Juhl, Wegner believed that striking aesthetics in furniture were based on a foundation of practicality: a chair must be comfortable and sturdy before it is chic.
In keeping with that tenet, several of Wegner’s best chair designs, seen in dealer listings below, have their roots in traditional seating forms. The Peacock chair (designed in 1947) is a throne-like adaptation of the Windsor chair; pieces from the China chair series (begun in 1944) as well as the 1949 Wishbone chair, with its distinctive Y-shaped back splat, are derived from 17th-century Ming seating pieces, as is the upholstered Ox chair (1960). Wegner’s comfy Papa Bear chair (1951) is an almost surreally re-scaled English wingback chair.
Wegner’s most representative piece, the Round chair (1949), gained a footnote in political history when it was used on the TV stage of the first Kennedy-Nixon debate of 1960. That chair, along with Wegner’s more bravura designs, for example the 1963 Shell chair, with its curved surfboard-shaped seat, bring a quietly sculptural presence to a room. Wegner was a designer who revered his primary material — wood — and it shows. His wood gathers patina and character with age; every Hans Wegner piece testifies to the life it has led.
