Le Corbusier LC 14 Box Stool / Authentic Mid-Century Modern Chandigarh

About the Item

Here we see a decision to project the universal ideals of modernity onto Indian reality. However, this piece was inspired by North Indian culture, as well the cosmic and spiritual Indian perception, that changed the rationalist perception of Le Corbusier in a substantial way. That is a one-of-a-kind piece – unique and outstanding, it holds a museum exhibit quality. An artefact for collectors and connoisseurs. A piece without any compromises. Highly valuable, rarely even offered by auction houses. However, it comes with a price. All parts are authentic. They are done in Indian teak. Rich in texture, the wood is vivid and comes in cognac colour. The surface is treated with shellac and there are several layers of original shellac. It provides smooth irregular gloss different from that of the sterile lacquerware nowadays. Charming irregularities show that each piece is unique. It was originally designed for Le Corbusier’s holiday house Le Cabanon in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin in 1952. It's a small house with a size of 3.66m x 3.66m (now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage site). He initially used this design for a sketch in 1951. Designed to be a multifunctional item – stool, step and side table, it had several versions. Le Corbusier loved implementing this object in his residential buildings, as it was a multifunctional piece of furniture which was easy to move. These pieces were custom made for specific projects, therefore not available for sale anywhere else, which explains why they are so rare.
