Lina Bo Bardi SESC Stools Pompeia, Brazil, 1980

About the Item

Striking pair of 'SESC' stools designed by Lina Bo Bardi, Marcelo Ferraz and Marcelo Suzuki and created for the centre SESC Pompeia in Sao Paulo, Brazil 1980. This stunning brutalist shaped stool fits logically to the architecture of the building where it was designed for. However, some of these stools were made for private projects as well. None the less it was not a mass-produced piece which makes this stool super rare, only a hand full of these are available on the market. Fantastic brutalist designed stool, made of different coloured, and layered pine wood, solid stool with stunning patina from age and usage. Striking pair in as found condition, carry a lot of character being intensely used over the past years and have its own story of patina. We have 2 stools available, but they are priced and sold individually. The SESC Pompeia in Sao Paolo had initially housed a drum factory and Bo Bardi was tasked with turning it into a community centre. SESC Pompéia was built after a 20-year military dictatorship in Brazil that created architecture that did not mirror the Brazilian culture. SESC Pompéia sent a shockwave through Sao Paulo. In 1982 the first stage of the complex was revealed. Bo Bardi had stripped away the plaster and then sandblasted the walls to find the essence of the large building. Her design combined red brick and unconventional concrete towers which were combined by aerial walkways. The building currently houses many activities rooms, including theatres, gymnasiums, a swimming pool, snack bars, leisure areas, restaurants, galleries, and workshops. These stools come from the library in that building which was only a small part of the building. Few of these stools were made and it is unclear how some of the stools got out as the interior is protected.

  • Michel Boyer for Rouve Rare Pair of "X" Stainless Steel and White Leather Stools
    By Michel Boyer, Rouve
    Located in New York, NY
Michel Boyer rare pair of architectural 'X' stools or tabourets with stainless steel bases and white leather cushions with central button. These iconic stylish stools were produced by Editions Rouve, France, circa 1968. Michel Boyer was an architect, interior decorator and designer renowned for his ability to incorporate decorative and design elements into preexisting architectural spaces. His best-known works are the interiors of the Rothschild Bank in Paris (1970) and the French Embassy in Washington, D.C. (1975). Many of his clients gave him carte blanche, so he worked with total freedom, creating harmonious spaces where furniture, lamps and other decorative objects embellished the décor. Concerned with production quality, he marketed his own production through the Rouve Gallery. While working abroad, and designing the diplomatic interiors in Washington and Brasilia, he became an ambassador for French design. By Blueprint Lighting, Stilnovo, Mathieu Matégot
    Located in New York, NY
Introducing Jenny, the latest vintage-inspired fixture from Blueprint Lighting. Named for multi-hyphenate Jenny Mollen; NYT best-selling author, actress, design enthusiast, mom of 2 and wife of actor Jason Biggs. From our Chief Luminary, Kelly Aaron: "I have been working closely with Jenny off and on for the past year while she gives her NYC apartment a facelift--it's been so fun! She and I share a love of 1950s French design, which is obviously a hallmark of the Blueprint aesthetic. One day Jenny texted a pic of a single vintage mid-century French wall sconce she loved and asked if Blueprint could make it for her. Funny enough--I, too, had seen that same sconce the day before and already had my Creative Director/Husband figuring out how to fabricate it. How great is that?! It was meant to be!" The Jenny sconce...
