Model No.78 Chair by Niels Møller for J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik, Denmark, 1960s

About the Item

This beautifully proportioned bespoke Model No. 78 ladderback dining chair by Niels Møller for J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and understated elegance of 1960s Danish Modern design. Crafted in rich, warm teak, the chair features a tall, sculptural ladderback with five gently curved horizontal slats that provide both visual lightness and supportive comfort. The frame is accented by Møller’s signature tapered legs and subtle joinery details that highlight the natural beauty of the wood grain. Due to a missing top support bar this chair has been fabricated by sanding down the tops of each vertical backrest supports creating a lovely "horn" shape at the tops making this Model 79 truly extraordinary. The seat has been newly upholstered in plush mustard bouclé, offering a soft, textured contrast to the teak while maintaining the original proportions and ergonomic silhouette. Niels Otto Møller founded J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik in 1934, and by the 1960s the workshop had earned international acclaim for its uncompromising quality and timeless designs. The Model 78 is one of his most enduring ladderback chairs, prized by collectors for its perfect balance of form, function, and exceptional woodwork. This versatile single chair works beautifully as a dining chair, desk chair, or accent piece in a living room or study. Its refined scale and rich teak make it ideal for both classic Danish Modern and contemporary interiors. A handsome and collectible example of 1960s Danish Modern design by Niels Møller for J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik — newly refreshed with mustard bouclé upholstery. ---Dimensions--- Width: 19.5 in / 49.53 cm Depth: 19 in / 48.26 cm Height: 34.25 in / 87 cm Seat Height: 18 in / 45.72 cm This stunning Model 78 Ladderback side chair designed by Niels Otto Møller for J.L. Møller Mobelfabrik has recently undergone a comprehensive restorations process featuring new upholstery and a modified backrest. The solid Burmese teak has been hand-sanded and refinished and shows only a small scratch and one intricate dowel repair on one of the legs (both shown in the detail photos provided) but showing no gouges, stains or other wear whatsoever and is replete with out-of-this-world variegated woodgrains throughout. *NOTE - this particular chair model has been fabricated with the top support bar missing, our craftsmen chose to sand down the tops of each vertical backrests supports creating a lovely "horn" shape at the tops. With this subtle fabrication this chair will not match with other Model No. 78 chairs. The upholstery, redone in a vintage-feeling bouclé fabric, is in showroom condition. The straps and batting have been replaced for maximum comfort and longevity. This gorgeous side or desk chair is incredibly comfortable, structurally sound and ready for a literal lifetime more of use thanks it's recent restoration process.
