Neoclassical Couple of Tall Chairs in Wood, Transparent Resin and Colored Tiles

About

The tall mosaiced chairs are in their style similar to the chairs of the famous designer Mackintosh who inspired many artisans at the beginning of the 20th century as this couple of antique chairs shows. The original sitting has been replaced with a sitting made of transparent plexiglass and colored mosaics, which are immersed in resin, in order to become part of the mosaiced furniture collection which finds its inspiration in the element 'water'. There is an extraordinary crypt from the 10th century in the Basilica of San Francesco in the Italian city Ravenna, where the mosaiced floor is always under water. This striking place and its changed water level lead to the idea of immersing mosaics in transparent resin and exploiting the space of the floor. The transparency permits a new way of using antique chairs, which makes them even more unique. Furthermore the transparent and colorful tiles on the sittings which refer to the Romanesque period reflect onto surfaces close-by like a wall or a floor when there is a strong light situation around. Used materials: couple of restored chairs made of beech wood from the beginning of the 20th century, handcrafted cherry and larch wood, transparent and colored plexiglass, epoxy resin Unique edition Exhibitions: the mosaiced furniture collection was launched in 2013 at the SaloneSatellite in Milan and since then exhibited at mintshop London, Rossana Orlandi Milan, Firma Casa San Paulo, Lane Crawford Hong Kong and some more.

About The Maker

HILLSIDEOUT

View Profile
HILLSIDEOUT is an Italian-German collaboration which combines antique restoration techniques with contemporary mediums. Founded in 2009 by Andrea Zambelli and Nat Wilms, the brand name is a linguistic game related to their vision of furnishings that finds inspiration in an external element from the land by bringing it "out" into interiors. The idea of "restoration" but also of artistic concept is consistently present and works in harmony with the strong belief in the contemporary. "We love to see historical layers. This is why we show them through transparent materials and time related mediums such as photography." Andrea and Nat enjoyed an Italian education. Andrea (b. 1978 in Italy) is a professional restorer of furniture with more than 15 years working experience in Bologna dealing with wealthy family heritages dating from the early 17th to the mid 20th centuries. As a designer he believes in a possible re-interpretation of his former profession believing that ancient skills of application, which are slowly disappearing, should be preserved. The insertion of innovative materials using antique manufacturing skills is based on the historical furniture tradition but also renews it at the same time. Nat (b. 1976 in Germany) is a freelance artist with a degree in Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna/Italy. She graduated in cultural-visual Anthropology in 2006 and works since then as a designer, a conceptualist as well as a teacher of multimedia classes.
