This lounge chair is an unique piece in pequi wood made in Brazil in 2017, by contemporary designer Hugo França, famous for his sculptural furniture using reclaimed wood and preserving the organic forms of the tree. This piece was originally a canoe manufactured by the Pataxó indigenous people, in south of Bahia, Brazil. In the early 80s, Hugo França abandoned his previous career as an industrial engineer in São Paulo to be closer to nature, moving to Trancoso, Bahia. Witnessing from up-close the rampant destruction of the local Atlantic Forest greatly impacted him, motivating his current work as a designer. Available today, this pair of midcentury modern chairs made in Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda & Cane designed by Alexandre Rapoport in the 1960’s are gorgeous! The delicate set features a Rosewood structure with caning in the seat. The Brazilian Rosewood is nothing less than spectacular and displays vibrant wood veins that almost feel the chairs are alive! The pair is extremely light weight, as a result of the Jacaranda's aging process. Extensive logging has virtually eliminated Rosewood from the Brazilian forests, so that today it is not supposed to be logged. The only material that can be sold legally is old stock. By owning a vintage piece made of old Jacaranda, you’re not only getting a beautiful collectible but also helping this species to recuperate. This gorgeous set would look great in any mid century modern, modern, contemporary environment used as dining or accent chairs. About the author, Alexandre Rapoport (Rio de Janeiro, 1929) is a Brazilian painter, architect, draftsman and engraver. Self-taught of Russian origin, he began painting at the Faculty of Architecture before the end of the 1950s.
