Pair of 19th Century Provincial Italian Renaissance Revival Sgabello Hall Chairs

About the Item

A pair of antique, circa 1830, Italian Renaissance style hand carved walnut sgabello hall chairs. Hand-crafted in Provincial Italy, most likely Tuscan region of central Italy, in the first half of the 19th century. This form of decorative stool dates to the 16th/17th century Italian Renaissance and was often placed in hallways, simply constructed of planks though frequently deeply carved and decorated with the family's imprese or drawn from its coats of arms. Its primary purpose was decorative, therefore the seat was not necessarily comfortable, but served well when additional seating was needed. Similar chairs were made in France, where they were known as a side chair. The pair offered here relies on an exquisite silhouette and planar form to create their strikingly beautiful rustic elegant simplicity. Highlighting restraint and dignity, having a shaped back, incised with foliate scrolls and intricate relief carvings, plank seat with molded edge, rising on stretcher-joined carved boards trestle supports. Dimensions: (approx) Each: 43" Tall, 15" Wide, 17" Deep; Seat height: 18.5" High Condition: Good original antique condition. Mellow warm, rich, nicely aged patina over the whole. Strong, sturdy and stable. Approximately 200 years old with expected wear and tear consistent with age and indicative of use, including retaining original antique character marks throughout, minor scuffs, scratches, scattered losses, and other minor imperfections, but nothing that detracts from the display or functionality, but only adds to the antique character, authenticity, and rustic old world European charm that can only be acquired over long periods of time. Delivered cleaned, hand waxed and polished hand rubbed French patina finish, ready for immediate use and generational enjoyment!
