Pierre Jeanneret Commitee Armchair by Cassina

About the Item

Committee armchair designed by Pierre Jeanneret circa 1950 , relaunched in 2022. Manufactured by Cassina in Italy. Part of the Hommage à Pierre Jeanneret tribute collection, the dining chair is known for its elegantly bold lines and solid wood structure and the iconic upside-down “V” lateral supports. The structure of the design armchair – available in the historic teak version and in natural oak or oak stained black – contrasts harmoniously with its soft padded parts for comfortable, supported seating. The Committee Chair is introduced in the original version and in a fresh, more versatile interpretation without armrests to fit seamlessly in the living and dining areas. These product is a tribute to Pierre Jeanneret, a key figure in the realization of Chandigarh. His experience in India lasted until the end of his days in 1967. His close and continuous contact with the local territory led him to combine essential forms with simple materials to create a meeting point between modern European ideals and the traditional Indian spirit. The Chandigarh project is considered Le Corbusier’s most mature work that summarises his poetics, technique and ideology, consistent with his will to research and contribute to the culture of architecture and design. Together, the pair pioneered a new aesthetic vocabulary that placed function and order over embellishment—Jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with energetic diagonals and lighter materials like cane and wood. A consistent innovator, he collaborated with Charlotte Perriand on experiments in aluminum and wood, and developed prefabricated housing with Jean Prouvé. In the early 1950s Jeanneret joined his cousin in Chandigarh, India, where they embarked on a massive urban-planning project, laying out the city and designing low-cost buildings and furniture. Though Corbusier abandoned the project halfway through, Jeanneret remained for 15 years as the project’s chief architect. The city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. About the manufacturer: In a continuing dialogue between past, present, and future, Cassina has created the I Maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by the twentieth century’s best-known architects, including Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Franco Albini, Frank Lloyd Wright and Marco Zanuso. While the designs and functional concepts have been precisely preserved, the models have been manufactured using evolved technology. This is also the company that has manufactured iconic pieces of contemporary design from the 50’s to the present day, ideated by some of the most important international designers. Today Cassina continues to look to the future of design with audacious, passionate curiosity and an open, holistic approach. It affirms its exclusive ability to furnish a home’s living and dining spaces completely and iconically with The Cassina Perspective: a concept, a philosophy, an informed, futuristic thought. A detailed, expansive horizon of combinations; when placed together, the products have an innovative soul and the modern icons create authentic, welcoming, personal atmospheres involved in a conversation dominated by a code of design excellence, formal sensitive awareness, solidity and cultural authority.
