Pierre Jeanneret, Rare Armless Easy Chair, Chandigarh, 1955

About the Item

Pierre Jeanneret; Le Corbusier; Armless easy chair; India; Chandigarh; 1955; 1950s; Mid-Century Modern; cane; teak; wood; rattan; side chair; dining room chair; This very rare armless easy chair by Pierre Jeanneret was created for the city of Chandigarh in India, the utopian city designed by his cousin Le Corbusier. Characteristics of this design are the solid teak frame, typical Jeanneret flat profiled leg assembly, tilted backrest, square cane backrest and cane rectangular seat. It’s a low chair with a raw appearance and a slightly patinated material. These specific features make the design even more powerful and interesting. There are only very few examples of this particular design, which makes this item highly sought after by collectors and design aficionados. Jeanneret’s designs stand out for their essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. Another interesting and nowadays relevant fact about these and other Chandigarh chairs is that all pieces were made from the trees which were logged because of the city built, so an early adaptation of ecological thinking. We have two chairs available, priced per piece. Both chairs are in excellent original condition. Check out our Goldwood storefront for more authentic design pieces by Pierre Jeanneret.

Office Cane Chairs by Pierre Jeanneret, PJ-SI-28-A, Chandigarh, 1955
By Pierre Jeanneret
Located in Antwerp, BE
Iconic "Office Cane Chairs" created by Pierre Jeanneret in the 1950s for the city of Chandigarh in India, the utopian city designed by his cousin Le Corbusier. Made of solid wood with seat and backrest in braided canework. Tilted backrest and asymmetric flat profiled "compass"-type double side leg assembly, with the legs connected by a crosspiece and supporting the armrests. Slanted, slightly curved backrest, separate from the seat. The seemingly floating back as well as the "compass"-type legs are very typical for this office chair. These specific features make the design even more powerful and interesting. The office chair was part of the furniture from the administrative buildings of Chandigarh. It's a true icon, one of the most famous pieces of all Chandigarh items. Jeanneret’s designs stand out for their essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. Another interesting and nowadays relevant fact about these and other Chandigarh chairs is that all pieces were made from the trees which were logged because the city was built, so an early adaptation of ecological thinking. We have four office chairs...

Easy Chair in Sissoo by Pierre Jeanneret c.1955
By Pierre Jeanneret
Located in London, GB
Wonderful original Easy Chair designed by Pierre Jeanneret. Model no. PJ-SI-29-A. The Easy Chair is masterpiece of modernist design, comfortable and practical, showcasing Jeanneret’s iconic “compass” style, with triangular-section legs, curved backrest and sloping armrests. Made in richly coloured Sissoo, lightly restored and re-caned to retain as much of the chair’s original patina as possible. Pierre Jeanneret (22 March 1896 - 4 December 1967) was a Swiss architect who collaborated with his cousin, Le Corbusier, designing furniture for Le Corbusier's vast modernist complex at Chandigarh. Jeanneret remained for over 15 years as the project’s chief architect and the city remains a masterpiece of the modern vision. The pair pioneered a new aesthetic that placed function and order over embellishment—Jeanneret’s work imbuing the strict geometry of modernism with lighter materials like cane and wood. Jeanneret also collaborated with other modern masters, Charlotte Perriand on experiments in aluminium and wood, and Jean Prouve developing prefabricated housing.
