Piet Blom Bastille Chair for Twente Institute of Technology, 1964

About

Here for a rare set of four Bastille chairs designed by Piet Blom for Twente Institute of technology, 1964. Piet Blom is better known by his cubic houses in Rotterdam and Helmond, designed in the 1980s. This example of the Bastille chair comes directly from the first big assignment he worked on in 1964; the conversion of an existing farm and the design of a newly built construction, the 'Bastille', for the 'Twente Institute of Technology'. Only 400 examples of the chairs were made and in the 1990s most of them were restored and repainted by TU Delft in nearly the same red but this is a set of four original examples coming from the top floor, these weren't used as much and in better shape so they didn’t need the restoration. The chair is fully made of painted wood, very nicely made and crafted. Marked on the bottom; Huizinga Utrecht-Holland, this was the manufacturer of the chairs in 1964. These four examples are in very nice condition with original patina. Important literature: 'Piet Blom', F.Strauven's, page 44, 59.
