Rare Model 132 Chair, Sigvard Bernadotte Sold by John Stuart, Denmark, c. 1953

About the Item

This rare and elegant pair of Model 132 accent chairs was designed by Sigvard Bernadotte for France & Son (France & Daverkosen) and distributed in the United States by John Stuart. Crafted in beautiful teak, the chairs feature Bernadotte’s signature clean lines and refined proportions, with sculpted armrests that flow gracefully into the tapered legs and a gently curved backrest that provides both support and visual lightness. The seats and backs have been newly upholstered in supple black leather, offering a sleek, luxurious contrast to the warm teak wood while preserving the original ergonomic silhouette. Sigvard Bernadotte (1907–2002), Prince of Sweden and one of the most versatile designers of the 20th century, brought a royal sense of proportion and modernity to Scandinavian furniture. His collaboration with France & Son in the early 1950s produced several iconic pieces, including the Model 132, known for its understated elegance and exceptional comfort. France & Son (formerly France & Daverkosen) was a leading Danish manufacturer renowned for partnering with top designers and producing high-quality teak furniture for both the domestic and international markets. These versatile accent chairs work beautifully in a living room, reading nook, bedroom, or as sophisticated desk chairs. Their compact scale and timeless design make them ideal for both classic mid-century and contemporary interiors. A refined and collectible pair of Sigvard Bernadotte Model 132 chairs — a perfect blend of Danish craftsmanship and Swedish design sensibility. ---Dimensions--- Width: 24 in / 60.96 cm Depth: 24 in / 60.96 cm Height: 32.5 in / 82.55 cm Seat Height: 18 in / 45.72 cm Arm Height: 24.5 in / 62.23 cm This extraordinary set of Danish-made armchairs has recently undergone a complete, exhaustive restoration process and the results speak for themselves. The seats and backrests feature new thick-cut, top-quality Italian leather upholstery with new medium density foam for maximum comfort and longevity. The brass fasteners that allow the seatback to adjust to the sitter's position show only minor nicks and tarnishing. These magnificent armchairs are incredibly comfortable, structurally solid and ready for a lifetime more of use thanks to their recent restoration process.
