ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

Six Very Rare 1930s Burr Oak Restored Robert Mouseman Thompson Dining Chairs 6
Located in GB
We are delighted to offer for sale this very rare set of six burr oak 1930s Robert Mouseman Thompson dining chairs in fully restored condition These chairs have been fully restored, all the original woven seats had dried and perished over the last 90-100 years of use, there weren’t safe to use, as such I have had all the woven leather replaced on every chair, it took 3-4 hides of thick veg tan plain leather which was hand dyed back to the original chestnut brown colour, I have a complete suite of pictures of the entire process. The frames have been glued and clamped where required, treated for insects as a matter of process not need, then deep cleaned waxed and polished The timber on these chairs is a bit of a lottery jackpot, they have the original scalloped backs which is basically the honeycombed look and feel, but these panels are all burr oak. To put this in context a small milking stool by Mouseman may sell for £200-£300 in normal oak, in burr oak it sells for £1600-£2000. The timber is super rare, highly collectable and the finest of all the Mouseman...

Amsterdam School Dutch Art Deco Expressive Chairs in Oak, Set of Six
Located in Antwerp, BE
Oak set of expressive chairs in the style of Kramer and Hildo Krop, Netherlands 1930s Amsterdam School set of six chairs, exuberant and sculptural, with ebonized tips. The velvet upholstery was already on the chairs, ask about our in house reupholstery service in case you desire something else.    The Amsterdam School (Dutch: Amsterdamse School) is a style of architecture that arose from 1910 through about 1930 in the Netherlands. The Amsterdam School movement is part of international Expressionist architecture, sometimes linked to German Brick Expressionism. Buildings of the Amsterdam School are characterized by brick construction with complicated masonry with a rounded or organic appearance, relatively traditional massing, and the integration of an elaborate scheme of building elements inside and out: decorative masonry, art glass, wrought ironwork, spires or "ladder" windows (with horizontal bars), and integrated architectural sculpture. The aim was to create a total architectural experience, interior and exterior. Imbued with socialist ideals, the Amsterdam School style was often applied to working-class housing estates, local institutions and schools. For many Dutch towns Hendrik Berlage designed the new urban schemes, while the architects of the Amsterdam School were responsible for the buildings. With regard to the architectural style, Michel De Klerk had a different vision than Berlage. In the magazine "Bouwkundig Weekblad 45/1916" Michel De Klerk criticized Berlage's recent buildings in the style of Dutch Traditionalism. In this context, the Stock Exchange by Berlage of 1905 can be seen as the starting point of Traditionalist architecture. From 1920 to 1930 different parallel movements developed in the Netherlands: Traditionalism (Kropholler, partly Berlage) Expressionism (de Klerk, Kramer) De Stijl (Rietveld, Oud, van Doesburg with manifesto De Stijl/1917 against the "Modern Baroque" of the Amsterdam School) Rationalism (van Eesteren, van Tijen, Merkelbach with manifesto De-8/1927 against the Amsterdam School) Constructivism (Duiker, van der Vlugt) The specific Brick-Cubism by Dudok and Berlage. The Expressionist architecture of the Amsterdam School was the most successful style of the 1920s. For many foreign architects, Amsterdam was the "Mecca" for new town extensions. But the Traditionalist movement lasted longer, until the 1950s, thanks to the so-called delft School, represented by Martinus Granpré Molière at the delft University of Technology. In the 1960s the Rationalist movement was dominant. In a well-known speech, the Dutch Rationalist, Willem van Tijen declared the Amsterdam School a warning example for architects (published in Forum 9/1960-61). After the death of Piet Kramer in 1961, no architectural institution or museum was interested in his Expressionist work. For that reason, all his drawings...
