Swedish Gustavian Chair with Wheat Carving, Circa 1780, Origin: Sweden

About the Item

A fine Swedish Gustavian chair with beautiful wheat carvings, circa 1780, origin: Stockholm, Sweden, dry-scraped to the original color, reupholstered in Rogers & Goffigon fabric.   This chair is a wonderful example of Gustavian purity of design along with the Swedish desire to reference nature with its wheat carvings. In the 18th century, Sweden had moved toward the purer and stricter form of Neoclassicism, which was stimulated by Gustav III's journey to Rome and Paris in 1783/4. Simplicity was fashionable. Dining chairs were generally inspired by English designs such as those of Hepplewhite or Sheraton. However, they were usually painted grey just as is our chair.
