Tête e Tête Gaming Set by William Westenhaver for Witco, c 1950, Signed
About the Item
This circa 1950s ornately crafted tête e tête with carved exotic details and soft furry sheepskin are a testament to William Westenhaver's modern rustic creations. Influenced by Polynesian natives sculpting their ancestral deities in to wood furnishings, Westenhaver fused his own graphic-design education and modernist artistry in to his designs. Both seats flip up to reveal storage, signed with original Witco label under one seat.
Westenhaver joined forces with Western International Trading Company (WITCO) in 1957 to bring his vision of Polynesian inspired furniture to life. Witco successfully brought the "tiki-fever" found in bars and restaurants of the era, directly into the American home.
This tête e tête is fabricated from red walnut with a distinct wood grain, and embellished with furrows, scrolls, flourishes, emblems and markings, of the Pop Primitivism movement. Being a fan of the movement, Elvis Presley created a "Jungle Room", dressed entirely in Witco furnishings at his Graceland Estate. If you're assembling your own "Jungle Room", inspired by the tropical trend in decor right now, or curating a design scheme that incorporates some whimsey this piece would aptly achieve those notions.
This Exotic Carved Tête e Tête by William Westenhaver for Witco would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Space Age Mod, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Post-Modern, Contemporary or Zen / Minimalism room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Hollywood Regency, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office.

- Vintage Witco Tiki King Throne Hand-Carved Highback Chairs in Faux Leopard FurBy William Westenhaver / Witco, WitcoLocated in Chattanooga, TNTake a walk on the wild side, or maybe just have a seat there with scepter in hand. Each chair has been recovered in high-quality, cruelty free, faux-fur that very much resembles the look and feel of leopard fur. Adorned top to bottom with hand-carved intricate detail. These highly collectible and hard to find thrown chairs were born of the jet-set era. The 1960s was the golden age of air travel and Americans were absolutely fascinated with “Exotica.” Ephemera from exotic tropical lands around South Asia were all the rage and gave birth to an explosion of tiki motifs in popular American culture. This project was a complete tear-down and rebuild. Every section was unbolted and individually restored. This sinuous, dark cedar has been painstakingly detailed by our in-house restoration team to both preserve the patina and address any imperfections in the wood. Lightly recolored and clear-coated to accentuate and preserve the character. The seats and backs were professionally reupholstered, and the results speak for themselves. We're more than certain these will exceed expectations. Robert Post Junior and Artist William Westenhaver Created Witco in 1959. The two capitalized on the exotica trend by creating lavishly bold, roughly carved wood furniture and decor. The delightfully dramatic furniture was so beloved during the period that Elvis created an entire “Jungle Room” in his Graceland home featuring Witco furniture! Witco remains a mainstay among collectors today. You can even see original Witco pieces still in use at Graceland, and other iconic tiki venues like Polynesian Gardens, the Hawaiian Inn, and the Aku Tiki Inn all located in Florida. We have other Witco items available including a pair of these conquistador chairs with arms, Witco cat...Category
