French Adjustable Chaise Longue in Black Iron and Wood

About the Item

Chaise longue, coated iron, wood, France, 1930s This functional, adjustable daybed features a frame in black metal and a seat of spiral metal webbing. The backrest is adjustable in different angles and allows the user to switch from an upright position into a comfortable laying position. Characteristic feature is the way the end of the footrest is angled in 90 degrees. It has a handle like finish that echoed the top end of the backrest. The metal frame consists out of tubular and flat elements, straight and curved lines that together create an exciting look. Special feature are the wooden armrests that add a wonderful contrast to the dark frame. This daybed or chaise longue is clearly inspired by the design of Jean Prouvé and Jules Leleu for a French sanatorium in 1937. The place was supposed to host officers in the east of France. Prouvé and Leleu were hired to design the interior. A limited budget and hygienic requests made them design steel furniture. In all rooms, 7 pieces, inclusive the chaise longue, were used to furnish the rooms. Please note that this piece is in used condition and shows signs of wear and use. If desired, the piece can be resprayed in our in-house atelier. We kindly ask you to contact our design experts to discuss your wishes regarding upholstery and finishing. Your special requests can be realized by the experienced craftspeople in our own in-house restoration and upholstery atelier. With high attention to the original, they make sure every piece retains its value and is ready for the many years to come. Please note that a custom-made reupholstered piece has a lead-time of twelve to fourteen weeks. All to meet our high-quality standards.

Antique French Gothic Oak Chaise Longue, Circa 1870
Located in Dallas, TX
In the 18th and 19th centuries, it was not uncommon for skilled craftsmen to repurpose older wood carvings into their own furniture creations. A French menuisier utilized this technique (circa 1870), incorporating a previously carved chair back and arms into the construction of this Gothic style chaise lounge. Based on the faded Gothic motifs and age separations, the repurposed pieces were most likely carved in the 16th century. The Gothic period carvings seen on the top rail include a series of foliate groupings flanked by bulbous finials. Although the carvings have faded over the course of centuries, the finials might have been leaf cups, which were often seen during the Gothic period. The back rest has been adorned with arcading beneath an infilled niche that is flanked by a pair of linenfold carvings. A cream colored cushion has been affixed by small nails above an apron embellished with barb tracery and ogee brackets. The entire lounge is supported by six block legs, with the back four extending directly from the back and the arms. Relatively low to the ground, our French Gothic oak...
