Olivier Mourgue (French, born 1939) is a French artist and industrial designer. Best known for his design of the Djinn line of furniture, Mourgue’s aesthetic is characterized by brightly colored jersey fabric stretched over structural steel frames that are filled with polyether foam, creating a unified, futuristic, alien-like modular form. Born in Paris, France in 1939, he began his career with an innovative design for a chaise lounge in 1964, after which he expanded his original furniture line to include loveseats, stools, and anthropomorphic chairs. Despite also producing paintings and drawings, his career was ultimately dedicated to industrial design, and provided a quintessential aesthetic of 1960s Modernist furniture...

An Iconic pair of French Mid-Century Modern armchairs, club or lounge chairs in solid cherry by Rene Gabriel, circa 1948. The chairs feature angled armrests and angled saber legs with stunning grid form back rests which propel the chairs forward into a distinctive modern sensibility. The grid back form has since become an emblematic design of Rene Gabriel.
In addition, Gabriel initiated a design innovation as he was one of the first designers to design the chairs proudly displaying their means of construction and to highlight the means of construction itself as an element of style! Thus, the solid cherry wood frame is tongue and groove notched and displayed at the front of the chairs where the legs join the arms. This gives the chairs a bold look. The chairs have been refinished and have new cushions covered in cotton.

A foot shaped chair titled UP7 (II Piede) by Gaetano Pesce, dated 1969. Featured is a black polyurethane foam chair with mottled texture structured in the form of a large-scale lifelike right foot.
As is typical of this iconic design over time, there are slight imperfections and such that develop on the black foam surface. This is part of the charm of this piece, as Pesce is commenting on and satirizing the worship of classicism and the classical ideal, as represented by the adoration of the often crumbling, incomplete and larger-than-life-sized perfect human body and its various parts in Greek and Roman traditions and the numerous classical revivals throughout the last 600 years. It’s interesting to keep in mind that the great masters of modern design self-identified as adhering to the classical ideal, restraint, perfect geometry, symmetry, functionality of form as well as a Humanistic outlook. Pesce, a young designer in 1969, was commenting on and deconstructing this directly with his UP7 to great acclaim.
