Robert Lewis Rolling Chaise Lounge Studio Crafted Santa Barbara, CA. 1930s

About the Item

A rare Robert Lewis chaise lounge hand crafted at his studio below the Old Mission Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara, California. He and his assistants produced an impressive catalog of great outdoor furniture in wrought iron, steel pipe and copper pipe from 1932 until his death in 1952. After Robert Lewis passed on his son, Edward and his assistants continued the family business into the 1960s. This rolling chaise is made from common steel pipe has two rings as finials from which it could be hung for lacquering or storage. Its design is simple, utilitarian and elegant. Robert Lewis influenced Walter Lamb. You can see two examples of this chaise on the upper deck of Fallingwater in Bear Run, Pennsylvania. This example of this chaise is in good condition and the original distressed red lacquer is preserved under its cord wrapping.
