About

This comfortable set of six (6) Le Corbusier for Alivar 'LC2' Club Chairs in gorgeous thick Italian brown leather, priced in this listing as a set. See our other listings for these priced per pair or contact us for details. Alivar was one of the better licensed (authorized) producers of the LC line for vintage productions of the design and besides Cassina is one of the favored and sought after variants. While Cassina examples are the most desirable, they also come with a heftier price tag. This set is an excellent opportunity to have great quality LC2 chairs at a fraction of the cost. The LC2 was designed in 1928 by Le Corbusier; his cousin and colleague Pierre Jeanneret; and Charlotte Perriand. Incredible quality thick and supple brown leather wrapped by tubular chrome frames, these fantastic 'LC2' lounge chairs are suitable for interior designers and modern design collectors. These elegant and sophisticated LC2 armchairs by Le Corbusier for Alivar would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Bauhaus, Scandanavian Modern or Danish modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an Apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as bedside chairs, fireside chairs, dressing or changing room chairs, hallway chairs, entryway or mudroom chairs, nursing or reading chairs, conference room chairs, guest chairs on the opposite side of your desk, lobby chairs or occasional chairs ideal in virtually any setting. (From Wikipedia) Grand Comfort is a cube-shaped high armchair, whose leather cushions are held in a chrome-plated steel corset. The LC-2 and LC-3 were referred as Cusion Baskets by Le Corbusier. They are more colloquially referred to as the petit confort and grand confort due to their respective sizes. In popular culture: The LC-2 (and similar LC-3) have been featured in a variety of media, notably the Maxell "blown away" advertisement. At the 2010 Apple event, the then CEO Steve Jobs used a Classic LC-3 chair while introducing the iPad. They are a permanent design collection of the Museum of Modern Art. In the modern day BBC adaptation of Sherlock Holmes (Sherlock), Sherlock Holmes sits in a LC-3, while Dr. Watson sits in a traditional Club chair. MEASUREMENTS: H 27.5" x W 30" x D 27.5" Seat Height: 17" Seat Depth: 21.5" CONDITION: Overall very good vintage condition, ready for immediate use. Chrome frames are in excellent vintage condition with minor scratches visible upon close inspection. No bends, breaks, dings, dents or major scratches. No rust or pitting, the chrome is bright and clean. Leather cushions are in good vintage condition with light wear and patina. One chair has a small scuff mark to the top of the seat approximately the size of a dime. A few smaller scuffs on other chairs. No tears, holes or rips. Some minor discoloration which may be fading from UV light. Overall the leather is attractive with light patina which is desirable for those who enjoy light age to their leather.

About the Design

LC2 Petit Confort Chair

Designed by Pierre Jeanneret
Does anything sound more comfortable than a “cushion basket”? That’s what Charles-Édouard Jeanneret (1887–1965), a.k.a. Le Corbusier, and his collaborators, cousin Pierre Jeanneret (1896–1967) and Charlotte Perriand (1903–99), dubbed the LC2 Petit Confort chair (as well as the rest of the similarly shaped seats in the LC series), the group’s modern take on an age-old form: the club chair. The LC2 Petit Confort chair quite literally inverts the traditional construction of a chair (or any piece of furniture, really) using an exoskeleton of chromed tubular steel instead of hiding the construction inside, prioritizing an emphasis on function that boldly declared their modernist approach. Meanwhile, thick leather cushions make the seat exceptionally comfortable and lend it a boxy appearance that is compatible with the architecture and design of the International Style in which the group worked. The trio conceived the cube-like seats in the LC collection in 1928 for exhibition at the 1929 Parisian art fair Salon d’Automne, and Austrian manufacturer Thonet was producing the group's designs at the time. Decades later, in 1965, when the designers’ modernist style had become widely popular, the LC2 Petit Confort chair was issued by Italian manufacturer and high-end furniture company Cassina, which continues to produce it today, along with the stylistically similar LC3 collection. The LC2 armchair was born of a period of experimentation with tubular chrome by the Le Corbusier group — archival sketches authored by Le Corbusier and Perriand are demonstrative of a two-year collaborative process, while Le Corbusier's brief identifies the latter as having been put in charge of furniture and interiors. (Furniture designer and architect Marcel Breuer, whose Cesca chair was similarly structured, was also working with chrome.) The use of chrome in the trio’s LC lines was groundbreaking at that point, and its aesthetic aligned well with Le Corbusier’s having given the furniture the mechanical-sounding label “domestic equipment.”
