$8,700

About

A freestanding tufted sofa named 'Constanze' (engl. Constance) designed by Prof. Johannes Spalt for Wittmann, Austria, manufacured in midcentury. By one hand movement the 'Constanze' changes from a sofa to a daybed. Johannes Spalt designed this convertible daybed in 1961 and the offered piece was manufactured early in 1960s. The very elegant six slim legs are made of wood and walnut. It is featured with a chromed or nickeled folding mechanism and it is upholstered with a moos green velvet. The fabric is in good condition, there is only one small spot on the seat with a diameter of about 0.3 inch / 8 mm with low velvet. The 'Constanze' is a beautiful design obect in a very high quality technique which can be positioned freely in a room because the backside is also upholstered. About Prof. Johannes Spalt: Johannes Spalt attended the 'Gewerbeschule' Salzburg and studied architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Clemens Holzmeister from 1949. He founded 'Arbeitsgruppe 4' (engl. 'working group 4') together with Wilhelm Holzbauer, Friedrich Kurrent, and with Otto Leitner which left in 1953. The groupd was named afterwards the '3/4-ler'. In 1969 he ran his own studio in Vienna, in partial cooperation with Friedrich Kurrent. From 1973 to 1990 Johannes Spalt was Professor of Interior Design and Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts Vienna and from 1975 to 1979 also its Rector. In addition to designs and realized buildings, Spalt created numerous furniture designs, for example for Wittmann Möbelwerkstätten. Johannes Spalt organized with Max Kurrent the first Adolf Loos exhibition: 1962 in Paris and 1964 in Vienna in the new museum of the 20th century. In 1965 the first Josef Frank exhibition took place in Vienna. Johannes Spalt was one of the most important Austrian besides Roland Rainer, Franz Schuster, Oswald Haerdtl, Carl Auböck, in 1950s and 1960s. The company Wittmann was founded as saddlery by Franz Wittmann in 1896. In 1970s Wittmann acquired the rights for the production of furniture designed by Josef Hoffmann. Some of them are the models Fledermaus, Purkersdorf, Haus Koller, Armlöffel, and the famous Kubus.
