Mid-Century Cleopatra Wide Daybed by A.R. Cordemeyer for Auping

About the Item

Cleopatra daybed designed by A.R. Cordemeyer for Royal Auping, featuring sculpted solid teak end panels, a near-black enameled metal frame with perforated side rails, and four tapered angled legs in matching dark finish. The wide version includes a new oatmeal woven mattress and a matching cylindrical bolster pillow. The low, horizontal profile and restrained use of materials reflect Cordemeyer's considered approach to Mid-Century Dutch furniture. Developed in 1953, the Cleopatra was Auping's response to the streamlined bedroom aesthetic gaining ground in post-war Europe. Royal Auping, founded in the Netherlands in 1888 and long established as a bedding manufacturer, commissioned Cordemeyer to create a design that bridged functional sleep furniture with the emerging Modernist sensibility in Dutch design. The model became one of the more recognized examples of mid-century Dutch domestic furniture production. Shows minor wear consistent with age and use on the frame and teak ends; the mattress and bolster are new.
