Bodil Kjær Principal Dining Wood Chair by Karakter

About the Item

Chair designed by Bodil Kjær in 1959. One of the last living mid-century Scandinavian design pioneers and a female pioneer in the field of architecture in her time, Bodil Kjær, conceived her Principal series in 1959 as part of an architectural exploration of interior solutions for modern living, called Elements of Architecture. Comprising a dining table and an upholstered dining chair, the Principal series epitomises Kjær's forward-thinking cosmopolitan outlook and modernistic design language that slips fluidly into contemporary interior. The solid wood dining table boasts a clarified form, repeating a simple angle throughout table legs and ends of the table top, while the dining chair with its circular seat and gently rounded backrest, beautifully upholstered, adds a softness to the clear, unfussed geometry. She designed a desk for MIT which was dubbed 'The most beautiful desk in the world' and eventually immortalized in 3 early James Bond movies. Danish architect, designer and professor Bodil Kjær (born 1932) is the female trailblazer of Danish midcentury design, who although tutored by modernist master Finn Juhl, in her own words "... never had much interest in following in the footsteps of the Danish rat pack". Kjær looked to America, inspired by Charles and Ray Eames, and indeed many of her most notable designs stems from her time in the U.S., where she briefly worked at Paul McCobb, before moving to Boston to further her career in corporate interior architecture. Kjær's reignited prominence as a designer in later years is well deserved. Pared back, elegant and decidedly modern, her iconic pieces slip effortlessly into contemporary life 60 years on. About the manufacturer: Karakter is a Danish design company founded on a spirit of exploration, courage and an uncompromising attitude to quality. Rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition with an international outlook, Karakter presents a portfolio of furniture, lighting and objects that is relevant, honest, expressive and sometimes playful. Aspiring to build an enduring legacy, they work with contemporary designers such as Aldo Bakker and PlueerSmitt and present works by the masters Bodil Kjær, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, Paul McCobb, Joe Colombo and Angelo Mangiarotti. Each piece has a clear, undeniable expression, ensuring it pride of place in private homes and public spaces worldwide.

Set of 6 Oak chairs with original patinated Niger leather. Jacob Kjær (1896–1957) was a Danish furniture designer and cabinetmaker. Kjær received training as a cabinetmaker in the workshop of his father who was also a furniture maker. After completing his training in Berlin and Paris, he exhibited works at the Barcelona World Exhibition in 1929. Characterized by simplicity, his designs drew on the finest materials which, unusually for his day, he crafted himself. Inspired by classical English Style, his clean, graceful designs are modern in interpretation. He did much to enhance the reputation of the Danish furniture industry as president of the Cabinetmakers Guild from 1952 to 1957 and of the Arts and Crafts Committee for Exports from 1944 to 1957. One of his most notable works is the FN Chair...
