Brazilian Midcentury Design, Caviuna and Cane Dining Chairs, 1950s

About the Item

Two of the pioneer companies to produce modern design in Brazil were Tenreiro Moveis e Decoraçoes (by Joaquim Tenreiro) and Forma S.A. Móveis e Objetos de Arte (by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler). Both companies were stamped on the most significant Architecture and Design publications' cover and were the right choice between the best architects and interior designers. Following the market flow, their designs inspired many other small manufacturers with their vanguard production concerning materiality (cane and leather) and the "modern values" of the form itself. This set of six dining chairs was manufactured in the 1950s by the Brazilian company "Hall, Moveis e Decorações." Chairs are made of solid Caviuna structure, green leather seats, and cane backrests. This chair is very similar to a model manufactured by Forma S.A. Móveis e Objetos de Arte a few years before. Despite having excellent quality, some details differentiate it from the original design. We consider this chair a free inspiration of the iconic chair designed by Martin Eisler, and it is essential to recognize this kind of production in our Furniture Design history – attributing, of course, the proper credits.
