John Van Koert For Drexel K60 Dining Chairs in Scalamandre Vinyl

About the Item

Drexel Profile walnut and pecan K60 Arm Chairs and Side Chairs, circa 1950s. Built like tanks, this large set of eight spindle back beauties have been restored to lovely condition. New faux leather Scalamandre vinyl seats are the perfect compliment to the light walnut finish on these MCM classics. Streamlined from top to bottom, the square, tapered legs are seamlessly incorporated into the overall form using Scandinavian Modern design. There are no abrupt angles in Drexel Profile. The subtle, graceful curves add a touch of elegance to an otherwise masculine look. The massive set includes two captains chairs with sloped arms. These armchairs are deep, wide and accommodating for even the longest of dinner parties. Drexel Furniture's "Profile" line was designed by John van Koert and released in mid-1955. van Koert was already well-known at the time for designing Towle's "Contour" line of cutlery, as well as Drexel "Projection." He was also the director of "Design in Scandinavia," a traveling museum exhibition that went around the United States showcasing pieces from 1954-1957 and helped spark the US interest in Danish design. The extensive Profile group has great poise and although contemporary in spirit, is adaptable and answers the demand for furniture that neither fakes the spirit of a past style nor merely expresses a designer's whim.
