Take a walk on the wild side, or maybe just have a seat there with scepter in hand. Each anthropomorphic gorilla-arm-chair has been recovered in high-quality, cruelty free, faux-fur that very much resembles the look and feel of leopard fur. Each high back is adorned with two hand-carved conquistador heads donning their iconic helmets. These highly collectible and hard-to-find thrown chairs were born of the jet-set era. The 1960s was the golden age of air travel and Americans were absolutely fascinated with “Exotica.” Ephemera from exotic tropical lands around South Asia were all the rage and gave birth to an explosion of tiki motifs in popular American culture. This project was a complete tear-down and rebuild. Every section was unbolted and individually restored. This sinuous, dark cedar has been painstakingly detailed by our in-house restoration team to both preserve the patina and address any imperfections in the wood. Lightly recolored and clear-coated to accentuate and preserve the character. The seats and backs were professionally reupholstered, and the results speak for themselves. Available today, this pair of midcentury modern chairs made in Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda & Cane designed by Alexandre Rapoport in the 1960’s are gorgeous! The delicate set features a Rosewood structure with caning in the seat. The Brazilian Rosewood is nothing less than spectacular and displays vibrant wood veins that almost feel the chairs are alive! The pair is extremely light weight, as a result of the Jacaranda's aging process. Extensive logging has virtually eliminated Rosewood from the Brazilian forests, so that today it is not supposed to be logged. The only material that can be sold legally is old stock. By owning a vintage piece made of old Jacaranda, you’re not only getting a beautiful collectible but also helping this species to recuperate. This gorgeous set would look great in any mid century modern, modern, contemporary environment used as dining or accent chairs. About the author, Alexandre Rapoport (Rio de Janeiro, 1929) is a Brazilian painter, architect, draftsman and engraver. Self-taught of Russian origin, he began painting at the Faculty of Architecture before the end of the 1950s.
