A set of four dining room or side chairs designed by Anna-Luelja Praun (1906-2004), Vienna, Austria, manufactured in midcentury, circa 1950. The seats and backs are covered with cane or wicker. The cane of two chairs has been restored. On one chair five of the cane straps have been replaced with new ones and on the other one seven. The new cane is currently brighter than the original old one but it will age gradually and become darker. The wooden parts have been restored. The chairs are in good condition and ready to use. Lit: Eva B. Ottilinger, Möbeldesign der 50er Jahre, p. 136 About Anna-Lülja Praun: Anna-Lülja Praun was born in Sankt Petersburg, Russia, in 6/29/1906 and lived in Vienna until 9/28/2004. She was an important Austrian designer and architect and she was one of the first females who studied architecture in Austria. In 1947 she worked on the restoration of the palace Belvedere which was heavily damaged in the second world war. In 1952 she opened her own studio in Vienna. She designed houses, interiors, furniture, shops, light fixtures and pottery (together with Gudrun Baudisch). From 1953-1959 she also worked for the furniture shop "Haus und Garten" which was established by Josef Frank in 1925. In 1959 she designed a bench "Bank zum Ausruhen" for the conductor Herbert von Karajan.
