Brazilian Dining Room Chairs

BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Brazilian Dining Chairs by Novo Rumo, Set of 8
By Novo Rumo
Located in Whitstable, GB
Eight beautiful dining chairs by Novo Rumo in solid wooden frame. Brazil 1960s These chairs have seat and back shell made in a single curved plywood piece, which is finished in high grade wood veneer. It also has original wooden Buttons on the seat. The set of eight chairs have been refinished, and reupholstered in Brazil with a luxurious velvet fabric. The hardwood frame has a beautiful live grain and colour. The great craftsmanship is a common in Novo Rumo pieces, and these are in very good vintage condition. Original unique brass screws, common amongst Novo Rumo and Zalszupin pieces. Produced in the 1960s, these pieces are often described as 'by Jorge Zalszupin for Novo Rumo’. Moveis Novo Rumo was a furniture studio and manufacture in São Paulo founded by Francesco Scapinelli: architect and ceramist, brother of celebrated designer Giuseppe Scapinelli. Novo Rumo produced excellent quality furniture at Industrial scale, using quality hard word from Brazil. Their pieces are always inventive, a unique design and of high quality craftsmanship. The design of these chairs- and many other produced by Novo Rumo, resemble Zalszupin's design probably due to his close collaboration and often contribution to Moveis Novo Rumo production. Novo Rumo's work is often also mistaken as L’Atelier (Zalszupin’s manufacture company) because several employees of L’Atelier left the company to join Novo Rumo. This group of chairs...

Set of 8 "Tião" Chairs, by Sergio Rodrigues, Brazil, 1959
By Sergio Rodrigues
Located in Whitstable, GB
Sergio Rodrigues Tião dining chair, Brazil 1959 Tião is a comfortable, classic and elegant chair designed by Sergio Rodrigues in 1959, and manufactured by Oca. We have a set of eight Tião chairs in dark solid hardwood frame, re-upholstered in a light grey fabric. In good vintage condition. Beautiful deep wood colour. Minor wear commensurate with age and use, for a vintage piece. Provenance of this set of chairs is a family home in São Paulo, where they formed a set with the iconic Burton Table, also by Sergio Rodrigues. Passionate about drawing and wood art since he was a boy, the world-renowned Sérgio Rodrigues (1927-2014) made history as a precursor of Brazilian design. He revolutionised aesthetics in the country in the 1960s with his original style of curved and generous shapes, representative of Brazilian culture. With this approach he created the Mole armchair in 1957, still an innovative design today and one of the most important works of the 20th century, responsible for projecting Brazil on the world design stage. The designer from Rio designed several other pieces that became design icons, such as the Mocho bench, the Oscar armchairs, Kilin and Diz armchairs...

Four Brazilian Midcentury Dining Chairs by Joaquim Tenreiro, 1960s
By Joaquim Tenreiro
Located in Utrecht, NL
4 beautiful 'curved' chairs by Joaquim Tenreiro. The chairs have a wooden frame with a D-shaped cane seat and a curved back with sixteen thin spindles. They are slender, light and the craftsmanship is almost flawless. Condition: In very good vintage condition. The grain of the wood has come out beautifully over the years. The cane has most likely been redone 5 - 10 years ago. We suspect that one of the item has been repaired in the past, but this is nearly invisible. Dimensions: 20.48 in. W x 19.69 in. D x 31.89 in. H; seat height 15.94 in. 52 cm W x 50 cm D x 81 cm H; seat height 40.5 cm About the designer: Living in a society where perfect execution is not everybody's primary concern, you can feel the amount of love, perfectionism and quality control that went into these chairs. Joaquim Tenreiro was born on 26 april 1906 in Melo, Portugal. After having lived in as well Portugal as Brazil, Tenreiro decided at the age of 22 to move to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for good. Following the trade of his Portuguese father and grandfather, who worked as joiner and carpenter, Tenreiro went into furniture making. In the beginning he worked for various furniture companies like Francisco Gomes, Leandro Martins and Laubisch & Hirth, where he had to copy traditional European designs for their wealthy but conservative clientele. An occupation that was very much disliked by Tenreiro. Until on a sunny day in 1943, life showed it’s bright side and handed him a shining opportunity. Read more about Joaquim Tenreiro.
